What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers help to restore our skin to its former youthful appearance. As the skin ages, it gradually loses some of its collagen, hyaluronic acid and fat. These are the materials that prevent the skin from becoming droopy or saggy.  Material is injected into the skin in areas where it needs to be plumped up again and made to look firmer.

Which dermal fillers to choose?

There are many kinds of dermal fillers and new ones are coming onto the market every day. They are generally made from either collagen or hyaluronic acid. They last between 6-9 months. Some common brand names include Teosyal, Restylane, Hydrafill, Juvederm and Radiesse. We use Teosyal, which is an Award Winning 100% hyaluronic acid based dermal filler. We use it as it is a non-animal product, it causes less pain and swelling on injection, it is very versatile and it has a superb safety record. Furthermore, it is temporary, giving you the chance to reassess your needs in 6-9 months. Over 600 000 syringes were injected before January 2008. Less than 1 in 20,000 reported any side effects, all of which were temporary and mild.

Areas that can be treated

  • Nasolabial lines (nose to cheek lines)
  • Diagonal lines from corner of mouth (marionette lines)
  • Vertical lines around mouth (smokers lines)
  • Frown lines
  • Horizontal brow lines
  • Scar treatment (including acne scars)

Before the dermal fillers appointment

A very small minority of patients (with specific conditions or on certain medications) should not have dermal fillers. Also some people will need to stop medications for a short period beforehand. To save a wasted visit, you will be shown these on booking an appointment on-line. Any questions not answered online can be asked over the telephone or email.

Contraindications to dermal filler

  • Are you pregnant?
  • Are you breast feeding?
  • Do you have any skin infection near the site of injection?
  • Are you allergic to hyaluronic acid?

  • Are you taking any blood thinning tablets (warfarin, clopidogrel, aspirin, high dose vitamin C, omega 3 oils)?

The consultation

At the beginning of the appointment, Mr Welck will find out exactly what you want. He will then carefully examine the contours of your face at rest and during expression. A great deal of care is spent tailoring a treatment regime to your exact facial structure, the symmetry of your face and most importantly your desired outcome.

Once this has been planned, photographs will be taken as a record of how you looked before the treatment. Numbing cream will then be put on your face, whilst you go to comfortable surroundings and fill in a simple questionnaire and to sign a consent form.

The dermal filler treatment

Dermal filler injections usually last under 5 minutes. The needle used is incredibly fine and pain is usually not an issue especially after the numbing cream.

You will be lying on a comfortable couch. Firstly the areas will be cleaned with an alcohol wipe. Any make-up can be removed at this stage. The injections will then be carefully and smoothly administered. They are then smoothed over to ensure a uniform appearance.

Side effects

These are incredibly safe injections. There may be slight redness and swelling at the injection site. Occasionally there may be some minor bruising. This generally subsides over 72 hours. Lumps at the injection site are avoided by massaging the product in.

Results

The results are visible immediately. The degree of correction is dependent on the patient's wishes and the amount of product used. The result usually last 6-9 months.
